The Company of Trees
An exploration of the sublime experience darkness. Large scale immersive drawings invite viewers to enter the dark spaces of the woodland while the construct is made apparent by the large pieces of paper hanging on the gallery wall. Although the places appear real, their photographic starting points have been digitally manipulated then mediated by drawing. I am interested in our acceptance of photographic media as truth when it is now so easy to alter. Re-presentation of photographic imagery as monochrome drawings takes the scenes a step away from the primary woodland experience.
The drawing process involves leaving white spaces on the paper and completely covering the remainder with charcoal. The image emerges from the blackened paper by repeated erasure and reinstatement of line and tone and gradually detail is defined. The bright white areas are untouched bare paper showing through the layers of dust.
Continuing the series of drawings with dark spaces. Magpies seem to be everywhere and they don't fit into the landscape visually because they are monochrome (at first glance). And there are the rhymes and superstitions; they have a malevolent presence in the drawings, hinting at narratives.
